Opportunities for Service
The Women's Society for Christian Service (WSCS)
The Women's Society for Christian Service (WSCS) is an international ministry within Methodist churches worldwide. Our local chapter is open to women of all ages who want to make a difference in the world, and they meet bi-monthly to learn about the needs and issues of poverty in the world, engage in service projects, and raise money for international missions. Every November, they host the WSCS Fall Bazaar with an arts & crafts sale, a frozen soups, jams & jellies and bake sale, and a delicious fried catfish lunch with thousands of dollars raised for local and international charities and missions.
The Men’s Club
(First Methodist Men)
Our Men’s Club is a group of men of all ages and stages that meet periodically to do service projects for the church itself, and to do fundraisers for the support and care of the church buildings and grounds. They sponsor work days and cleanup days, and are famous for their Men’s Club Fish Fries where they partner with the Catfish Navy to cook some delicious catfish & hushpuppies to raise the funds for keeping our building maintained and our A/C running in the summer!
Local Missions and Service Projects
First Methodist of Greensboro is committed to doing much more than just serving our own church. We find plenty of ways to serve our neighborhood and community in Greensboro/Hale County. We have a “help yourself” food pantry box that we keep stocked with donated dry/canned goods. We participate every year in the Martin Luther King Day of Service in Greensboro with other churches in our neighborhood on MLK Day, where pick up trash and clean streets, we do painting and beautification in our local schools, do yard work for seniors, volunteer at the Boys & Girls Club, and have done cleaning, yard work, painting & construction for the MLK Safehouse and Horseshoe Farms residences. We have collected supplies for victims of tornadoes in Sawyerville and hurricanes on the Gulf Coast, and sponsored free “Hot Dog Giveaways” by sharing free lunches with all who come by. There are plenty of ways you can get involved in serving the Black Belt community at First Methodist!
Overseas Missions
Members of our church have gone on mission trips to Mexico, Jamaica, and RedBird Mission in rural Kentucky, and have been supported by the giving of our members. Our annual giving to the World Service Fund in our denomination supports national charities like Habitat for Humanity and the Black College Fund, and international ministries like the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) which goes all over the country and world to bring relief to flood victims in Texas and Florida, to earthquake victims in Colombia and Haiti the hurricane victims in Puerto Rico and Louisiana, the displaced refugees of war-torn Syria, and all around the world. And every Christmas, we participate in Operation Christmas Child, filling shoeboxes with school & health supplies, clothing and gifts for needy children around the world!
